Wyoming County, PA, BDO Zone Overview

Feedstock quantities are expressed in bone dry tons per year (bdt/yr), while feedstock costs are expressed in USD ($). Maximum transport distance is based on a 75-mi driving distance from the center point (Tunkhannock, PA).

BDO Zone Assets:
  • Over 662,000 bdt/yr woody biomass comprising 550,000 bdt/yr of pulpwood, 64,000 bdt/yr of forest residues, and 48,000 bdt/yr of sawmill residues available at low risk.
  • Limited competition for pulpwood with no pulp and paper facilities in the region enhance favorable competitive dynamics in the BDO Zone for future biomass projects.
  • Leading the nation in hardwood lumber production and export, the highly productive forest products industry ensures a stable feedstock supply.
BDO Zone Liabilities:
  • Migration of loggers and trucking companies to the local shale gas industry weakens supply chain capacity for biobased projects.
  • Inactivity of pulpwood supply chains relative to pre-2000 levels necessitates capital investment to scale up.
  • Aging ownership and management within logging companies may pose challenges for ownership transfer upon retirement.
